TypograFriday: Live the Language

The first time I went to Europe, I went on an EF tour — plus, I have travel on my mind right now — so these videos are right up my alley. They are lovely and educational, but what makes the Live the Language series extra special is the fantastic regionally-appropriate typography, done by Albin Holmqvist. I hope they add one for Rome — I’m trying to learn Italian, and I love any opportunity to see Italy.

Daily Drop Cap redux

W

e posted about Jessica Hische’s Daily Drop Cap way back in September 2009 when it first began. Today marks what was supposed to be the final day of this project as she completes the 12th alphabet.

But, as an added treat, there will be an additional 13th alphabet appearing starting tomorrow. The 13th alphabet will be designed by guest designers like Marian Bantjes, Louise Fili, Friends of Type, and The Heads of State! I’m really looking forward to seeing what the guest designers come up with.

Let’s Swap!

Let’s Swap — a new project from Brooklyn-based hyperakt — is an awesome site that enables artists to swap their art for the featured print. The print that is currently available is the Good Morning/Good Night from Dolce Press.  It is full of awesomeness — letterpress, glow in the dark and an upbeat message. If you’ve got something to trade, go submit your swap and see if you get chosen, otherwise the print can be purchased from Dolce Press’s shop.

UPDATE: Our CMYHey Triangle print was chosen by Dolce Press as a swap. You can go vote for us to put us in the running to maybe be a featured swap in the future!

Etsy Schmetsy: Year of the Rabbit

We’re in the midst of Chinese New Year, and entering into the Year of the Rabbit on Thursday. I already have my Year of the Bunny Rabbit calendar poster up at work, and Etsy is littered with bunnicular awesomeness.

Superior Servers

I have a bit of a problem with buying more kitchen stuff than I have room for. But, that doesn’t mean I want these from Ladies & Gentlemen and less. The blue would look super lovely in my house, but so would all of the other colors. They are available for purchase here.

Flickr Mondays — Vintage Matchboxes

For the upcoming issue of Uppercase, Janine Vangool asked readers to reinterpret vintage matchbox labels inspired by her own collection. You’ll have to wait to see the submissions, but Janine has posted a huge number of her vintage collection on Flickr. Here are a few of our favorites, head to flickr to see hundreds more.

As an added bonus, subscribers to Uppercase will each receive one of the matchbox covers from Janine’s collection in issue 8.

Spoonful of Sugar

Check out this beautiful hand-lettered umbrella! It is from Spoonful of Sugar, Leen Sadder’s project for Stefan Sagmeister’s class “Can design touch someone’s heart?” at SVA.

According to the Spoonful of Sugar facebook page, “Mary Poppins is on a mission to cheer people up on a rainy day. With a hand-lettered, spoonful-of-sugar-blasting umbrella and 100 chocolate-dipped spoons, she will be escorting unhappy, umbrella-less people across the streets of NYC.” Sounds pretty awesome.

Black Swan

I haven’t gotten a chance to see Black Swan yet, but I really want to. These international teaser posters for the movie are  making me want to see it even more. The posters are available as iPhone and desktop wallpapers from the Black Swan site. I haven’t yet been able to find them for purchase, but there is a mix of real and fake ones on ebay. Does anyone know who designed these posters?

UPDATE: The posters were designed buy La Boca. Also, in addition to finding the posters on ebay, Fox Seachlight has launched a shop where you can purchase the posters along with other merchandise with La Boca’s designs.

TypograFriday: The Alphabet

For the first TypograFriday of 2011, here is a lovely little font-filled film, The Alphabet from Alessandro Novelli.
