Etsy Day: Scherenschnitte!

Many cultures have many different names for the art of cut paper: Scherenschnitte (German), Kirie (Japanese), Sanjhi (Indian) and Papel Picado (Mexican) are just a few. In honor of etsy day and my love of silhouettes, I’ve chosen some papercuttings that range from semi-traditional and folky to super-intricate and modern. All of these amazingly delicate works of art are cut by hand.

Etsy Day: Useful sites for Etsy sellers

monkey1

I love having a shop on etsy, but, as anyone who sells on etsy will tell you, it requires a fair amount of work to do it sucessfully. If you have an etsy shop and need a little help, or if you are thinking about starting an etsy shop, I highly recommend checking out the links below.

The Ultimate Newbie Guide
This newbie guide from sagittariusgallery just had its second anniversary in the forums. It is an amazing resource for new sellers and buyers on etsy. It has links to tons of useful forum posts on topics from uploading a shop banner to tracking views in Google Analytics to tips on photography for your instagram likes and comments, facebook post likes or social media site.

The Etsy Seller’s Handbook
The Etsy Seller’s Handbook is an index of all of the How-To posts from Etsy’s blog, The Storque. The Storque is a great reference in general, but the articles linked from the Seller’s Handbook seem particularly useful. There are articles not only on the basics of selling on etsy, but but also on topics like marketing and pricing, click here for marketing advice and services for your business.

Etsy Wiki
I think the name explains it all. It is a user-contibuted wiki for all things etsy-related.

Craftcult Heart-o-Matic
I look at the Heart-o-Matic all the time. It is a super convenient way to see if your shop or items have any new hearts. Craftcult has also recently added an area where you can see if any of your items have been featured on the front page, on the Storque or any of the Gift Guides.

Craftopolis
Craftopolis is another great tool similar to the Heart-o-Matic. It tells you if you are featured in any treasuries (including treasury west).

Modish Biz Tips
If you read design blogs, chances are pretty good the you’ve read Modish, from blogger Jena Coray. But you may not know that Jena also has a business blog, Modish Biz Tips. Modish Biz Tips has, as the name would suggest, a ton of great business tips for creative small-business owners. They are launching a new monthly feature called The Etsy Way, which will be written by Shannon Riffe and will feature etsy selling and marketing tips.

The Bakery
The Bakery is a firm owned by Jaime Derringer and Erin Loechner that helps small businesses with a variety of business needs like marketing, blog development and PR. I haven’t used them, but their blog has a number of uesful business related articles and they also have an etsy shop which sells a printed manual for selling on Etsy.

If there are any sites/links that have been of particular help to you, please post them in the comments below.

Please note, The Experts Agree is not responsible for the content on any of the sites mentioned above. None of the above sites, with the exception of the Storque, is affiliated with Etsy.com.

Etsy Schmetsy: Plaid? Rad!

Everyone seems to be mad for plaid these days. I’m a sucker for intersecting stripes, so please enjoy just a few finds from Etsy. If you do, I’ll be ever so glad.

TypograFriday: fantastic clothing and accessory finds for type lovers

Row 1:
This Kern ring set from plastique* was the inspiration for this week’s Font-y Friday. These rings are so geeky, but I think they are hysterical. They remind me of the Veer sweatshirt which I have always wanted, but still don’t have.

Owen bought me this Epershand Necklace from Isette during a fit of etsy shopping a few weeks ago. Each time I wear it, I get a ton of compliments on it. (In case you are wondering, ephersand is the Scots and Scotish English word for ampersand).

Row 2:
Lorem Ipsum “Ketchup and Mustard” shirt from The Select Series at Threadless.com. Almost any shirt with this classic greeked text phrase would be a hit with us, but this one is executed perfectly in streams of ketchup and mustard.

In a similar script, with a tagline that gets funnier with each line, there’s also the “My Baseline is lower than yours….much lower…” shirt from Workerman.

Row 3:
My appreciation of Helvetica has grown hugely since watching Helvetica. Show your love for this classic typeface by wearing this Helvetica Neue Descending tank from typography shop.

Futura Bold necklace from This is Star Jewelry. Owen says, “It’s one cmd-i away from being the perfect accessory to wear to a Barbara Kruger exhibit.”

Row 4:
The Swash Buckle and Kern Sweatshirt from veer.com; Veer has a bunch of great products for the discerning type nerd — these are just two of our favorites.

Row 5:
I bought Owen this Personalized Typography T-shirt from Enzyme Press for Christmas last year. It calls out the typographic terminology of your chosen word (baseline, counter, x-height etc) and you can choose from a variety of typefaces, shirt and ink colors.

Great screenprinted Typography shirt from stiksel. Owen bought a handkerchief from her the other day; it’s pretty fantastic too.

living stones and baby toes

For the past few days, I haven’t had a moment to breathe, let alone post something. But when my amazing new succulents arrived yesterday from Monkeys Always Look, I was so happy, I had to share.

The one that looks like a heart split down the middle belongs to the Argyroderma (meaning “silver skin”) genus, and is commonly referred to as a “living stone.” The other plant (that looks to me like a bunch of little sea snakes swimming together) is known as “baby toes” (genus Fenestraria meaning “window”).

I am absolutely in love with them.

EtsyGreetings Mother’s Day promo

mom_green_standing_311il_430xn65656932il_430xn56959135

Owen and I are members of the etsy team Etsy Greetings. It is a pretty active group of greeting card designers. One of the things I like most about selling on etsy is the sense of community and support you feel from other sellers. Etsy teams are a really great way to help build those connections.

mothers_day_2009Etsy Greetings is running a free shipping for Mother’s Day promotion from April 13th – May 5th. We’re offering free secondary shipping (to the US and Canada) on cards from our Cards for Mom section.

To view a complete list of cards from the participating shops, click here. Participating shops will be using this avatar, so they are easier to identify.
