Check out this beautiful hand-lettered umbrella! It is from Spoonful of Sugar, Leen Sadder’s project for Stefan Sagmeister’s class “Can design touch someone’s heart?” at SVA.
According to the Spoonful of Sugar facebook page, “Mary Poppins is on a mission to cheer people up on a rainy day. With a hand-lettered, spoonful-of-sugar-blasting umbrella and 100 chocolate-dipped spoons, she will be escorting unhappy, umbrella-less people across the streets of NYC.” Sounds pretty awesome.

Thanks to one of my new favorite blogs, The Jealous Curator, I just discovered TypArchive, an amazing collection of images of hand-painted, neon and dimensional signage. Aside from being really nice to look at, I think it could be a great resource if you are looking for a little typographic inspiration. When Owen and I travel, we are constantly snapping pictures of cool typography; perhaps we’ll need to submit a few images.
TypArchive is an image library primarily focused on hand painted signage. The objective is to amass a comprehensive global collection of a high-quality images and produce hard-copy volumes.
Amidst a landscape of vapid strip malls and sterile signage, hand-painted lettering retains a soulful aesthetic to be treasured. Like other crafts dissolving in the digital age, sign painting is a fading occupation. Today it’s easy for any layman with minimal computer knowledge to produce a sign within minutes, but the skill acquired to artfully produce hand lettering took years of apprenticeships, dedication and true talent. – RD Granados

Linzie Hunter‘s handlettered spam subject line series made a lot of buzz in the blogs a year back (and are now available as a postcard book from Chronicle Books) but we’ve recently rediscovered more examples of her awesome lettering. More images and words after the jump.

Every once in a while, a sample set presents itself which offers a fascinating glimpse into the trends and influences of the day. This flickr set of 35 posters for the Flight of the Concords 2009 North American tour is one such example.
The disparate designers of these posters had no unified design spec, though of course they had the same band/tv show/season of year to reference. And yet looked at as a whole, a shocking number come back to the same overall colorschemes (midtone blues, greens and tans, very few dark colors). And in terms of type trends, the set reflects a terrific microcosm of what’s going on in the world of “indie”-flavored typography right now: filled-counter letters are inexplicably still super-hot across many subcultures, lifting from the 70s is perfectly OK, and innocently irregular hand lettering conveys a sense of rakish charm second only to Bret and Jermaine themselves.
Credits for type collage (for each artist, the first link goes to an image of the full poster on flickr, and the second goes to their own site)
